Twenty-three-year-old Sydney Shulman (USA) topped the first international event of the week in the $10,000 New York Speed Stake CSI2* on Thursday, May 10, riding Ardente Printaniere, while Hundred Acre, ridden by Barbara Spizzirro, was named Grand Adult Amateur Hunter Champion at the 2018 Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows, running May 8-13 and May 15-20 at Old Salem Farm in North Salem, NY.
Shulman hails from Greenwich, CT, and grew up riding at Old Salem Farm. She and her mother Jill will be competing with the riders of their own Back Country Farm throughout the two weeks of the Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows.
On winning the first international competition of the week, Shulman said, “You can’t start the week off any better than this!
“This mare has a huge stride, so after the first double down the hill, I trusted how careful she is and really galloped away from that first combination to the next combination,” continued Shulman on the 12-year-old SBS mare by Joyeux Ardent she got from Maarten Huygens and McLain Ward in August of 2017. “I think that’s where she may have had it because she covered so much ground.”
Shulman stopped the clock at 63.87 seconds and furthered proved Ardente Printaniere’s knack for speed, saying, “I got her to be another Under 25 or 1.50m grand prix horse for me, but she has turned into quite the speed horse and it’s where she is comfortable, so that is where I will place her now.”
Ireland’s Cormac Hanley tried to best Shulman on two different mounts, but settled for second in 64.30 seconds with VDL Cartello and third on a time of 66.13 seconds riding Alma Z, both owned by Heathman Farm, LLC. Lauren Fischer (USA) took fourth in 68.54 seconds riding Tosca du Feugre, owned by Cheryl Fischer, while Jonathan McCrea (USA) rounded out the top five aboard Win For Life in 69.16 seconds for owner Candy Tribble & Windsor Show Stables.
Hundred Acre Claims Comeback Grand Adult Amateur Hunter Championship Title
Barbara Spizzirro of North Salem, NY, piloted Hundred Acre to the Grand Adult Amateur Hunter Championship with four first-place ribbons and a fourth under saddle in the Adult Amateur Hunter 36-49 division.
“I was exceedingly happy with him,” said Spizzirro of her 11-year-old Westphalian gelding. “He was better than I ever expected him to be. I have been riding him for six years, so we are familiar with each other. He’s slipped right into a really good gear for us.”
The honor marked a comeback for Hundred Acre after Spizzirro spent the winter season rehabbing him from a minor injury.
“This was our first show back and I love this show,” said Spizzirro, who trains with Keirstin Johnsen
at Riverside Farm. “I have to thank Keirstin. She has been wonderful with me and this horse. She is a godsend.”
Reserve champion in the Adult Amateur Hunter 36-49 division was presented to Mimi Moulton riding Trip To Paris for owner Privet Farm, LLC. They were second and third twice over fences, as well as fifth under saddle.
International jumper competition continues Friday with the $35,000 New York Welcome Stake CSI2*, presented by Douglas Elliman Real Estate, on the Grand Prix Field while the Grand Amateur-Owner Hunter Champion will be crowned in the Main Hunter Ring. Live streaming of the Grand Prix Field at Old Salem Farm is continuous Thursday through Sunday and available at OldSalemFarm.net. Also on Friday, the $5,000 Equitation Challenge will welcome top junior riders to the Sand Ring to battle it out for the 2018 title.
Spectators are welcome at the Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows with free general admission to Old Salem Farm Wednesday through Friday. On the weekends of May 12-13 and 19-20, admission is $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and children under 12.
