Palm Beach Equine Clinic (PBEC) announced the addition of new, innovative equine reproduction techniques to its cutting-edge suite of client services. A long-time leader in equine veterinary care, Palm Beach Equine Clinic, located in Wellington, FL, is advancing its breeding and fertility services to provide additional modern methods to increase the probability of a successful pregnancy.

Committed to innovation in the field of equine reproduction, Palm Beach Equine Clinic will now provide advanced modalities including Transvaginal Oocyte Aspiration (TVA) for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). ICSI has become an invaluable tool for overcoming fertility issues in sub-fertile mares and stallions. The combination of TVA and ICSI procedures has gained traction and become popular within the sport horse community as a method of producing offspring with limited interruption to the mare’s training and competition schedule.

TVA procedures are performed at Palm Beach Equine Clinic’s facility by collecting oocytes (or eggs) from the follicle of a donor mare’s ovary. After the follicles have been aspirated, the oocytes are shipped to a specialized ICSI laboratory for fertilization. The ICSI procedure involves the micro-injection of a single sperm cell into a mature oocyte to produce an embryo. These embryos can then be transferred to the uterus of a recipient mare or frozen for future use.

On the stallion side, ICSI can also maximize limited reserves of frozen semen because only a single sperm cell is selected and injected.

In addition to providing TVA procedures, Palm Beach Equine Clinic is one of the only facilities in South Florida to accept stallions for sex-sorted semen collections. Stallion owners are now able to choose the future sex of the foal by utilizing frozen ICSI doses of semen.

“We are proud to be leaders in the field of equine reproduction by offering advanced services including TVA for ICSI,” commented Dr. Justin McNaughten, Palm Beach Equine Clinic’s board-certified Equine Reproductive Specialist. “Another exciting innovation this year is our ability to utilize sex-sorted frozen ICSI semen. We feel fortunate to be able to offer this service for stallions at PBEC.”

These new advanced techniques, along with a full range of traditional reproductive services, are available at both Palm Beach Equine Clinic’s Equine Hospital and in private barn settings.
