Luis Sabino Goncalves (POR) piloted Vick du Croisy, owned by Sigma Stables LLC, to the top prize in the $100,000 Florida Coast Equipment Grand Prix on Saturday, February 18, 2023, during the seventh week of the Winter Spectacular Show Series at World Equestrian Center – Ocala in Ocala, FL. This win marked Goncalves’ second grand prix victory of the show series.

Leopoldo Palacios (VEN) designed a challenging track for the starting field of 38 horse-and-rider combinations. Only seven competitors managed a fault-free first round to qualify for the jump-off. Goncalves and the 14-year-old Selle Français gelding flew through the timers in 37.592 seconds to secure their spot at the top of the podium.

“The question was to do six [strides] or seven from one to two,” explained Goncalves of the jump-off track. “I was first in, and I wanted to put the pressure on so the rest would have to go after me. She walked down the six, and we found everything else forward. The double combination was big, but my mare is so careful. I trusted her quality, and she proved herself. To the last fence, I just went for it. I am not even sure how many strides I did to the last fence. I asked my team, and they couldn’t tell me because they were all just focused on the clock.”

Will Simpson (USA) rode his own Chacco P to second-place honors with a time of 38.552 seconds. Lisa Goldman-Smolen (USA) and Ivaro N, owned by Barbara Disko, received third place after stopping the timers at 40.279 seconds.

Taylor Marie Land (USA) and Escobar WW, owned by Team Land Syndicate I LLC, claimed top honors in the $15,000 Buckeye Nutrition Futures Prix on Friday, February 17, 2023, under the lights in the WEC Grand Arena. The class included nearly 40 competitors who attempted to navigate a clear round over the course designed by Leopoldo Palacios (VEN). Eight combinations successfully managed a fault-free first round to advance to the jump-off. Land and the eight-year-old Oldenburg gelding produced a blazing time of 40.741 seconds to secure first place by a lead of just under four seconds.

“Escobar WW is my obsession,” said Land of her mount. “He’s an incredible horse with all of the heart and try in the world. We bought him in the summer, and he’s the first horse I’ve ever syndicated. I am so grateful to all of his owners for believing in me, and I just know he is going to be something special.”
