Adrienne Sternlicht won her second Martha W. Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) season on Saturday evening, March 12, during week nine of the 13-week circuit in Wellington, FL.
Sternlicht of Greenwich, CT, accumulated the highest number of points among all female athletes competing in the $75,000 Adequan® WEF Challenge Cup Round 9 on Thursday, March 10, and the $406,000 CSI5* Douglas Elliman Grand Prix held on Saturday evening, March 12. Sternlicht and her mount, Benny’s Legacy, jumped double clear to earn fourth place in Thursday’s class and placed 12th following the jump-off on Saturday night under the lights in the International Arena.
“I was trail riding earlier today and I said to my friend, ‘I really hope I win Leading Lady again,’” said Sternlicht, 28. “This award really recognizes consistency, and there are so many top female riders from all over the world showing here. I’m always impressed and inspired by my peers. We are all so competitive and trying to do this the best we can. To win Leading Lady during another five-star week is such an honor. Again, thank you so much to Martha for sponsoring this award. It is something that every one of us female riders aim for and dream of winning.
“My horse was incredible in the qualifier on Thursday,” continued Sternlicht of the 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding (Lupicor x Acordia) owned by Starlight Farms, LLC. “We have been working on our jump-offs a lot in the past year, and we had a really nice jump-off in that class. My horse always shows up for me, and I feel so lucky to have a horse like that to campaign in these classes because they are so difficult. I think if you told me a year ago that this horse would consistently be jumping clear in five-star classes, I wouldn’t have believed you. He has a special story and connection to me as well as my grooms, and I really think he knows that in the latter half of last year, he had to step up with my top mount, Cristalline, being out. He’s come into form in a way I never could have anticipated.”
In recognition of winning the Leading Lady Rider Award, Jolicoeur and her husband, Dr. Stephen Norton, presented Sternlicht with a bottle of champagne, a bouquet of flowers, and a gift certificate for a shopping spree at Hunt, Ltd.
A long-time sponsor and dedicated supporter of horse sport at WEF for many years, 2022 marks Jolicoeur’s 12th season presenting the Leading Lady Rider Award. A former competitor herself, Jolicoeur enjoyed a successful international show jumping career before becoming Florida’s number one Douglas Elliman real estate broker.
Throughout WEF, the Martha W. Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award, given in memory of fellow realtor and horsewoman Dale Lawler, is presented each week to the female athlete who earns the most points in the weekly WEF Challenge Cup Series and grand prix events. During the final week of WEF, the Martha W. Jolicoeur Overall Leading Lady Rider Award will be presented to the female rider who accumulates the most points throughout the 13-week circuit.
