Hayley Anderson Concludes Vermont Summer Festival with $10,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic Win

Hayley Anderson of East Boston, NH, won the $10,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic on Sunday, August 12, marking the conclusion of the six-week, 25th annual Vermont Summer Festival in East Dorset, VT.
Anderson and Capella, owned by RAF LLC, were one of only two entries to successfully navigate the Ken Krome-designed course without fault, and they produced the only double-clear effort of the day, taking the win with a jump-off time of 46.10 seconds. Second place with four faults in the jump-off and a time of 49.83 seconds went to Elizabeth Stroh of Grosse Pointe Farms, FL, riding Canoso. Serena Marron of New York, NY, finished in third with just one time fault riding Up’an Go de St Druon.
For Anderson, 21, and the 11-year-old warmblood, Capella, the win was particularly impressive, as Sunday marked Anderson’s first time riding the gelding, which is regularly ridden by Ashley Foster, 22, of Brookeville, MD.
After Foster dislocated her shoulder in a fall on Saturday afternoon, the young rider and her mother, Patty Foster of Rolling Acres Farm, turned to Anderson, who has trained with Rolling Acres Farm while in Vermont for the last three summers.
“After Ashley fell yesterday, Patty was kind of just joking around, ‘Well someone’s got to [ride] Cappy tomorrow!’ ” said Anderson. “Then she was serious, so she asked me if I wanted to do it, and of course I said yes! He was fantastic. I flatted him this morning for the first time, and then he jumped and schooled great. He was really great when I went in the ring. He’s super game, and he was a little keen.”
The Fosters just imported Capella from Europe earlier this summer, and the Vermont Summer Festival marked his first horse show in the United States.
“I did the Junior/Amateurs last week, and he was amazing,” said Ashley Foster. “He could use all the experience he could get, so I really wanted Hayley to ride him because I knew she’d do an amazing job on him, which she did obviously! He’s a really cool guy. He’s learning how to be an American horse. He had a very large man riding him before, now he’s just had two small girls riding him.”
“He was super fun,” said Anderson. “He stayed right in front of my leg the whole time; he galloped right around and was fantastic.”
Now Anderson will return home to New Hampshire where she also trains with her mom, Gretchen Anderson, but she looks forward to returning to Vermont next summer.
“I love everything about it here,” said Hayley Anderson. “It’s just so fun. The whole atmosphere is great. They welcome you right in. I love the whole horse show. It’s beautiful in the mountains; the exhibitor parties are great; I just always have a great time here.”
The Vermont Summer Festival is New England’s largest hunter/jumper competition and the richest sporting event based on purse in the state of Vermont with more than $750,000 in prize money. The event is also a proud member of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame, the Marshall & Sterling League, and the North American League (NAL). Outside the show ring, exhibitors are immersed in the charm of Vermont's shopping, dining, and outdoor activities.
